You have heard of direct marketing. It’s a process that allows people to sell products and services directly to the public, taking the middleman out of the equation, and companies like Avon and Amway are popular brands in the industry. Despite its prevalence, there has long been controversy surrounding the business model. Some people have referred to direct marketing (DM) as a pyramid scheme, noting that people at the top make money by bringing in more people. Others, like Stormy Wellington, vehemently disagree, and she has good reason to. Wellington, who has over 70,000 Instagram followers and is considered one of the top performers in the business, has used direct marketing to dramatically change her life. After navigating odd jobs and promising small businesses to make ends meet, Wellington got involved in DM, found his niche and literally made millions. Now she’s also dedicated to teaching others (her social media handle is even @coachstormy) how to do the same. EBONY asked the entrepreneur to speak candidly about the industry, from its stigma to the formula for winning those legendary six-figure checks. Here’s what she had to say:
It’s not a pyramid scheme: “People who say that are just repeating what they heard. The pyramids have no product exchange. There is no salary. In direct sales, we trade dollars. My business has no advertising budget or middleman: we are the billboard and the advertisements. Every time you make a sale, you receive a check. There is compensation for referrals, but talent scouts, managers, and agents receive a referral fee. Franchises also work the same way. You can pay $ 500,000 to buy a franchise and pay them 25 percent of your earnings.
Believe in yourself: “We have an epidemic of non-believers. People talk about faith but don’t live it. You have to believe that you can and will change your life. You have to believe in the products you choose to work with. Everything in life involves risk.
Focus on the 5Ps: “You can sell a lot of things in direct marketing, from teas and coffees to health products. The goal is to find a good business. Here are the five things you need to do—
- Find a business that matches your ppersonality and complements the way you want to do business, from the way you organize meetings to the product.
- Determine if the pCompany leaders, like the CEO, complement your values.
- Love the pproduct you are selling. Pick something that excites you and motivates you to want to share it naturally with others.
- Understand the pprocess and system of how you will do business. How to effectively sell your product? How are you going to engage customers? Where will you engage clients? How many items should you sell per day?
- What is your paycheck? Any company you work with should have a compensation plan that makes sense for you and your financial goals. It will keep you inspired.
